Printer laws,
read straight.

Every law and bill aimed at 3D printers and 3D-printed firearms — what each one actually says, where it stands today, and what it means for the people who print. Maintained by the 3D Printing Weekly meetup.

Get in before the standard exists

AB 2047 is law, but it does nothing until ASTM International publishes a blocking-tech standard. That makes the next few years the time to act.

  • Join ASTM Committee F42. ASTM is the law's on/off switch, and individuals can join its additive-manufacturing committee as voting members. Consensus standards have to resolve technical objections, so makers with real data belong in the room.
  • Send in false positives. Everyday files that shape detectors wrongly flag (hose-sprayer triggers, tubes, prop blasters) are the evidence that shapes standards and rules. Save and document the ones you hit. Never share actual firearm files.
  • Ask for a wider exemption. The law exempts entertainment-industry props and lets the DOJ add exceptions. Ask for cosplay, costuming, theater, schools, airsoft and replica builders.
  • Comment when the DOJ writes rules. If a standard ever appears, the DOJ must consult stakeholders with public comment. Ask for an appeal path for blocked prints, offline operation, and detection of working firearm parts rather than shapes.

This tracker is maintained by the 3D Printing Weekly meetup community as a plain-language reading of public legislation. It is not legal advice, and laws change faster than any tracker — every card shows the date we last verified it, and every card links its primary sources so you can check us. Spotted a bill we missed or a status that moved? Bring it to the Thursday meetup, the Discord, or open an issue on GitHub.
